Der Wettbewerb wurde 1996 durch Ecovin ins Leben gerufen und ist seit 2017 für alle öko-zertifizierten Weingüter offen. Der Wettbewerb wird nach den strengen Regeln des OIV (Office Internationale du Vin, Paris) ausgeführt und ist durch das Weinbauministerium in Mainz offiziell anerkannt. Es werden jährlich mehr als 550 Bioweine aus fast allen deutschen Anbaugebieten von der fachkundigen Jury verkostet.
