Geologische Besonderheiten

Der RHEINGRABENBRUCH

Die Entstehung der geologischen Besonderheiten unserer Weinlagen ist dem Rheingrabenbruch zu verdanken. Der Bruch entstand bei der Aufwölbung des Erdmantels nördlich der Alpen, die darüber liegende Erdkruste hielt der Spannung nicht stand, so dass sich der Scheitel der Wölbung des Rheingrabens einsenkte und sich seine Ränder heraushoben.
Dies geschah natürlich nicht plötzlich, im Laufe dieses langwierigen Prozesses der Landschaftsbildung bewegte sich die Erdkruste etwa einen Millimeter pro Jahr, das bedeutet: In 1000 Jahren verschob sich die Erdkruste um einen Meter, in einer Million Jahren um einen Kilometer. Der Rheingraben sank also in 49 Millionen Jahren maximal um 3,335 Kilometer und zerbrach dabei in viele geologische Schollen. Seine jährliche Senkungsrate beträgt heute 0,1 bis 0,7mm; demnach sinkt der Graben in der Gegenwart genauso schnell ab wie im Tertiär. Die Höhe des Rheingrabenbruchs beträgt bei Basel rund 250 Meter, bei Mainz sind es nur noch 80 Meter.

Die Luftbildaufnahme von Frankweiler zeigt den Bruch, der am Waldrand verläuft. Dahinter befindet sich die Randscholle des Ringelberges, wiederum dahinter die Scholle des Orensberges.
Der Rheingraben stellt den mittleren Abschnitt eines Grabensystems in Europa dar, das vom unteren Rhone-Tal bis in den Raum Oslo reicht. Fachleute der Plattentektonik nehmen an, dass entlang dieser Nord-Süd-Naht der Kontinent sich teilen und das Meer wieder in den Rheingraben eindringen wird.
In den obersten 30 cm eines nachhaltig bewirtschafteten quadratmetergroßen Bodenausschnitt kann man folgende Bodenlebewesen finden: 50 Asseln, 80 Regenwürmer, 100 Käfer und Larven, 300 Vielfüßler, 100.000 Milben, 1.000.000.000 Pilze und 1.000.000.000.000 Bakterien.
